Private health insurers often provide less coverage for the treatment of mental illnesses than they do for the treatment of other illnesses. For example, health plans may limit treatment of mental illnesses by covering fewer hospital days and outpatient office visits, and increase cost sharing for mental health care by raising deductibles and copayments.
